Safety Tips For Budget Travelers in Foreign Countries

The biggest area of concern for travelers can be their safety in a foreign country, regardless of whether they are budget travelers or not. Equally important is the safety of their belongings. In order to make the travel memorable and safe in a foreign country, we have listed a few safety tips that one can follow.

1. First and foremost, hold a valid passport and ensure that you have all the required visas that you may need. An important tip is to keep a photocopy of the passport and visas at home or any other secure place. Just in case the passport or visas get stolen, then you can procure at least the photocopy of these documents.
2. Some tourist places may be notorious for prevalence of certain anti-social activities. Make sure you research about the places you would like to visit, in a foreign country.
3. Make it a point not to carry valuables or other costly items in your baggage.
4. Consider traveling by prepaid taxis, cabs or auto-rickshaws, available at airports, railway stations etc. This is safe because firstly, they are registered with the respective unions after their credentials and history has been checked. Secondly, they have to charge a fixed rate depending on the destination, which will be intimated to you at the pre-paid taxi/cab/auto booking center.
5. It is best to tour lesser known, remote tourist destinations in a group or with a companion.
6. Always keep some emergency numbers in handy, like that of the nearest police station and the local embassy.
7. Be considerate and sensitive to the local culture and traditions. In most Asian countries, it is best to be dressed conservatively.
